What is Coaching?

How could it help me?

“At its heart, our role is to shine a light on something our client cannot see for themselves.

And with that light, our client sees things they couldn’t see before.”
— Marion Franklin

Coaching involves me partnering with you in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires you to maximize both your personal and your professional potential.

I will help you to significantly broaden your perspective, expand your self-awareness, increase your emotional intelligence and create more control and discrenment in your actions and decision-making.

The professional coaching approach that I practice is based on a large body of research, evidence, psychology, neuroscience and proven techniques. The core of my approach, which is to help you develop greater psychological flexibility, is proven in research to be the best predictor of high performance, workplace attendance and financial turnover.

In coaching, we assume that, since you are the expert in how it is to be ‘you’, your coach is only there to guide you, not to tell you what to do or how to be. Coaching comes from the fundamental assumption that you already have all the core skills, capabilities and beliefs within you for achieving more and living a fuller life, all of which are just waiting to be released from you and properly harnessed by you.

A coach will always think of you in terms of your full potential (what is possible) rather than your current performance or situation (how you are right now). It is my job as your coach to help you to release that potential and to head in the directions that are most productive for you (perhaps also the most meaningful and fulfilling for you).

If you’re wondering how coaching compares with counselling or therapy, the most important difference is that coaching assumes you are well, you are resourceful and that you wish to improve things in your life from this position of already being OK.

Coaching focusses on what’s going on for you right now and how you want to be. Coaching does not dwell in the past or assume you need ‘fixing’. Coaching moves quickly into how you can put into practice what you have learned about yourself and your challenges in each session, and what you choose to do to take fuller control of your life.

Benefits of coaching

Coaching is a joint endeavour to discover new thinking that energises change

Good professional coaching doesn’t just allow you to achieve specific business or work goals. Just as importantly (probably more importantly) it results in you developing personally in a number of critical areas, such as:

  • How to have a signficantly broader perspective (e.g. see more points of view, abandon unhelpful biases and beliefs, challenge fixed/rigid ways of thinking, acquire greater amounts of information)

  • How to perform more effectively, and achieve more, in whatever you do.

  • Increasing your self-confidence and capability, and those of others around you.

  • Increasing your emotional intelligence (self-awareness, relationship-management, empathy, and relationships).

  • Understanding your own strengths and hang-ups (your ‘inner leader’, ‘inner critic’, etc.).

  • Identifying and tackling your blind spots, weak spots and patterns of unhelpful thinking/behaviour.

  • Responding more strategically to events, rather than the same old automatic reactions

  • How to notice and deal with issues and situations where you may get ‘stuck’ – and to get un-stuck.

  • How to better lead, manage, motivate and collaborate with your team and colleagues.

  • How to recognise and deal effectively with stress, anxiety and other emotions of yourself and others.

  • Formulating a personal vision of how you want your life to be - and helping you work towards that.

  • Bringing more balance, sense of purpose and sense of direction to your life and work.

  • Exploring any neurodivergent aspects you may have, in an ND-affirming space.

As a coach I can provide you - in a confidential, one-to-one setting - with time and space to reflect on your work and your life; to explore your goals and challenges with clarity and focus; and to work out how your ‘best self’ can turn up every day.

Next step… or simply to find out more

If you wish to try some coaching me - or even if you aren’t sure but would like to know more, the next step is to contact me to book a free chemistry session.

In the chemistry session, as the name suggests, we will try some coaching and see if we get on with one another.

I will send you a short, confidential questionnaire before the chemistry session, to obtain a few key facts about you, and we will spend 30-40 minutes in which I will provide you with a powerful coaching experience, entirely free of charge and without any obligation to go further.
